Audi A5: New Kid on the Block

The news and buzz around the new Audi A5 and Audi S5 lines from Audi continues as we approach launch dates around the world. There is no question that the A4/S5 models have created quite a stir with Audi first re-entry into the coupe marketplace in a number of years.

These coupes are expected to compete with both the Mercedes Benz CLK series as well as the BMW 3-series of coupe vehicles. Analysts are expecting Audi to command a considerable share of the market.

Here are a couple of excerpts on this article out of Ireland:

The A5 debuts Audi's new MLP platform (modular longitudinal platform) which will also underpin the next generation A4, A6 and A8 models. The platform is notable for its departure from Audi's trademark "overhung" engine mounting position over the front axle, in favour of the powertrain being located behind the front axle - in an effort to achieve a more even weight distribution (55/45) between the front and rear wheels.....

.....This four-seat coupé measures just over 15ft long and in A5 guise offers a choice of front- or all-wheel drive and, at least in Europe, a wide selection of engines. Two direct-injection petrol engines, a 170-bph 1.8-litre turbocharged four and a 265-bph 3.2-litre V-6. Two TDI direct-injection diesels include a 140-bhp 2.7-litre V-6 and a 265-bhp 3.0-litre V-6. The A5 is also offered with a choice of 6-speed manual or an automatic with a sport tap-shift mode.
There may also be an RS version of the A5 called the RS5. Its main competitor will be the BMW M3 coupe and will most probably have the 4.2L V8 from the RS4, producing 420 horsepower.
